## What GFRP rebar is

GFRP rebar is a composite reinforcement bar made from glass fibres bound in a
resin matrix. It replaces conventional TMT steel reinforcement in concrete.
Because it contains no steel, it cannot corrode — which removes the primary
long-term failure mode of reinforced concrete. It is not plastic; it is a
structural composite governed by design codes including ACI 440.11-22,
CSA S806, and the Indian material standard IS 18256.

## Key properties

- Tensile strength: up to ~1500 MPa (TMT steel: ~250–500 MPa)
- Weight: approximately 80% lighter than steel of equivalent capacity
- Corrosion resistance: does not rust, including in marine and chemical exposure
- Service life: 80–100+ years design life
- Electrical conductivity: non-conductive
- Magnetic properties: non-magnetic (suitable near MRI, radar, transformers)
- Thermal conductivity: very low
- Available diameters: 4–24 mm; bends available 4–16 mm
- Theft risk: none — no scrap resale value

## Typical applications

Slabs (roof, floor, balcony, parking deck, swimming pool); retaining,
basement and boundary walls; foundations including raft and slab-on-grade;
bridge decks, approach slabs and barrier walls; culverts, storm water
channels and manholes; concrete pavements, airport runways and rail
crossings; chemical plant and secondary containment structures; substation
and transformer yards; water and effluent treatment tanks.

## When steel is still preferred

RebarX recommends conventional TMT steel for column sections of RCC
construction. GFRP also requires fire protection above roughly 300 °C.
